Low-Maintenance Plants for Cleaner and Healthier Air

Indoor plants help create a warming and pleasant atmosphere by purifying the air. They also remove harmful chemicals and improve your mood. The best part is that some of them don’t need much maintenance to do all this. Here are some low-maintenance plants for cleaner and healthier air.

1. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is one of those plants that anyone can care for because it’s so easy. This succulent can help purify the air and remove benzene and formaldehyde. The plant also offers plenty of healing benefits when used in at-home remedies. Many natural remedies rely on aloe vera due to the anti-inflammatory properties it possesses.

All you’ll need to keep your aloe happy is a bright, indirect light and an occasional watering. Watering once every two weeks or so should be enough.

2. Barberton Daisy

Barberton daisy plants are effective at clearing benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene. The beautiful red, yellow, and orange petals of the daisy also make it an attractive addition to the home.

While this plant prefers direct sunlight and warmer climates, it adapts well to its surroundings. Keep it in direct sunlight if you can, but don’t worry too much if you can’t.

3. English Ivy

English ivy plants are easy-growing and are effective for removing faecal particles from the air. They also remove mould and keep your house looking good. These benefits make it a natural addition for the bathroom.

NASA studies show that English Ivy is one of the best houseplants for air purification.

4. Peace Lily

Peace lilies are a common sight in office lobbies. The plant is pretty and practical, not to mention one of the few house plants capable of flowering. This is a good choice for low light situations because it does well in shadier environments. The plant even lets you know when it needs watering because it droops a little.

Peace lilies break down and eliminate toxic gases including formaldehyde and carbon monoxide. Do keep in mind that it might be mildly toxic to pets. It’s best to keep the plant out of their reach.

5. Boston Fern

The Boston fern is a member of the fern family of plants, which dates back over 300 million years. Ferns appear across the world and survive a variety of environments. The American Fern Society estimates there are some 12,000 fern varieties in the world.

Most ferns are adapted to the dappled sunlight that makes it to the forest floor, so they need filtered light to survive. The Boston Fern has been grown at home since Victorian Times, making it suitable for growing at home. Boston Ferns are particularly effective at removing formaldehyde.

6. Rubber Plant

Not only do rubber plants fit perfectly into almost any aesthetic, but they are also very low maintenance. The plants have thick and glossy green leaves. These plants grow well in almost any home with minimal care.

What you do need to give your rubber plant is plenty of bright diffused light, but it shouldn’t be in direct sunlight because this could singe the leaves. Rubber plants become dull and floppy if they don’t have enough light.
